Corner of Market and 5th Street Circa 1895 Electricity was brought to San Diego in 1886 as electric lamps were added to the center of town. In this image, on of the corner of Market and 5th in 1895 an electric light can be seen hanging to the right of center. These lights were originally put on a “moonlight” schedule, meaning they were only turned on when there was insufficient moonlight. Electric trolleys were also added to the town giving access to the newer areas of the city such as North Park and Mission Hills.
