A Little Look at San Diego’s Lighthouses and a related whimsical tale or two!

Six lighthouses have sent beam into or out of San Diego. We’ll take a look at these six, see lots of photographs borrowed from adult children of San Diego’s light keepers, and tell a tale or two of life for lighthouse families living on Point Loma. Enjoy a peek at the recent restoration of San Diego’s operational lighthouse.
Join us on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 7 pm for our next “History Talks!” Lecture with Writer, Historian, and Educator Karen Scanlon.
Scanlon has written extensively on the maritime history of San Diego, particularly of the lower Point Loma Lighthouse. She and her twin, Kim, are volunteers at Cabrillo National Monument and care for the lens and lantern in the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The two co-authored the book, Lighthouses of San Diego.
Lectures are free for GQHF Members, $5 for the public.

History Talks! is a monthly lecture series presented by the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House. Take a stroll through the Gaslamp’s haunted history with Davis-Horton House historian, Sandee Wilhoit, who will recount ghostly happenings of the past...and of the present. Visit hotels, saloons, brothels and a long-ago funeral parlor, and end your tour INSIDE the Gaslamp’s most haunted edifice - the Davis-Horton House. The tour takes place rain or shine. Reservations are strongly recommended but please note before booking that there are NO REFUNDS.

Sunset Cliffs Park meanders along a mile and a half of San Diego’s coastline, beckoning tourists and locals alike. These stunning cliffs inspired Albert Spalding, sportsman and visionary, to create a park in 1915 for all to enjoy. Many have left their mark in the century since, including the mighty Pacific Ocean. John Mills, an enterprising land baron, restored the original park, only to have it fall into neglect during the Depression and World War II. It became a popular spot for pioneering surfers and divers in the postwar boom. The park’s colorful sunsets and landscape attracts artists, children and others that enjoy beauty.

Our Historian will guide you as we take a look at some of the ornate and historically significant Victorian era Buildings in the district. This one block walking tour is ideal for everyone desiring to learn the history of the district and get a close-up look at the different architectural styles of the Gaslamp Quarter while avoiding a lengthy walk, standing for an extended period of time, and busy street crossings! The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes.
